—Geoffrey Hinton (cognitive psychologist and computer scientist)

The use of AI for making faster and more accurate decisions compared to humans is critical for creating added value with AI. However, the pursuit of new AI innovations in the past year has prompted various AI leaders and researchers to issue an open letter urging AI labs to pause their work for six months. In their letter, they state that the latest advancements in AI could represent a profound change in the history of life on Earth and should be ‘planned for and managed with commensurate care and resources’ (Rash 2023). The consequences of not providing such care and planning can be dire as these ‘powerful digital minds’ may become impossible to understand, predict, or reliably control, even by their creators (Future of Life Institute 2023). Prominent AI leaders who signed the letter include Yoshua Bengio, founder and scientific director at Mila and professor at the University of Montreal; Bart Selman, professor of computer science at Cornell and past president of AAAI; Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, Tesla, and X (formerly Twitter); and Steve Wozniak, cofounder of Apple. That concern was shared by researchers from Max Planck Institute in a recent academic publication. In their publication they are arguing that humankind might not be able to control a super‐intelligent AI because it is ‘potentially ...
