CHAPTER 8Self‐Care Is a (Growth) Mindset
“The one thing in life that's for certain is change.”
Change is part of life. We grow up just a little every day and we mature just a little every day. Seasons change and as the saying goes, “We cannot step into the same river twice because it has already changed.” And so have we. Change is an interesting challenge for us humans.
If you're like most people, change is something you either resist, embrace, or pursue. It's a bit of a paradox as we want things to change, but we don't always want to change. The discomfort of change can hold some of us back as it triggers our insecurities and imposter syndrome, while for others, it's the excitement of change that makes up life. Change plays out in our relationship with evolution and triggers both our human fear and our human desire. On one hand, we might want change, crave change, and dream about change when our current situation is not optimal, while on the other hand, when we feel happy and content, we often want things to stay the same.
While change comes in numerous forms and flavors, at its core, there are three primary types. First, there's the type of change that happens unexpectedly that we didn't ask for. Second, there's the type of change that we want to make and need to figure out how to implement. Third, there's the type of change that's gradually happening around us, and it affects us in a more indirect way while giving us time to adjust.
