Working in Partnership at Transition Periods

The SENCo needs to take a strong lead in helping colleagues to plan both entry and departure from the school for pupils with SEN. These are key points in the pupil’s life; good planning, record-keeping and communication can make a great deal of difference to their well-being. There are three critical action times:

  • Entry to school: planned entry is necessary for children identified in pre-school as having special educational needs or a disability, with or without a statement.
  • Transition between phases or schools: usually primary/secondary although infant/ junior or first/middle possible, as are changes due to moving house.
