The most common criticism of consultancy work is that once a consultant’s report has been completed it is put on the shelf to gather dust along with all the other consultants’ reports. As a result, the change is only short-lived and the problem returns. Imagine if you went to the dentist only to find that your toothache returned the following morning or employed a builder to construct an extension and found cracks appearing two weeks later. The goal is real long-term results, not short-term fixes. Czerniawska (1999) aptly makes this point:
