Appendix FGlossary of Terms

This glossary of filmmaking terms is not meant to be comprehensive. For instance, common crew positions are not defined. This list concentrates instead on words and phrases that might be less familiar or that might have a different meaning in other contexts.

Account: In the many tiers of a budget, the account is the first level of division. Each department in a production is tracked under a separate account.

ADR: Automatic Dialog Replacement. A process of dubbing clean, studio-recorded dialog over a scene when the original production audio is defective.

Allow: A round figure entered into a budget in lieu of a reasoned calculation.
