Researchers have created intelligent agents that can learn a wide range of tasks just by experimentation, often to superhuman levels of performance. The example of an agent that plays video games provides a reminder that these machines can take unexpected shortcuts, exploiting properties of their environment that might be unknown to us, and failing to appreciate the broader meaning of their actions.
