The Challenges

This chapter will go into further details of the driving forces behind the shift towards smart grids: it will explain what are the actual challenges faced by the grid, the reasons for developing new technology. The first two challenges to be discussed have an immediate relation with the transition to a sustainable energy system: the need for integrating large amounts of renewable electricity production (to be discussed in Section 2.1) and the need for the integration of large amounts of energy-efficient equipment (to be discussed in Section 2.2).
