This book was written during a two-month period (July and August 2011) and is about the smart grid, from the viewpoint of the electricity network (“the grid”). Many discussions within the field of power systems (and even some far beyond that field) are about the smart grid, especially about what it is and what it is not. In this book, I present the smart grid as “what it should do”. For that purpose, I have translated some of the developments in society into challenges for the grid.
