CHAPTER 11Smart Philanthropy
INTRODUCTION
People give to charity for many different reasons: admiration for particular leaders or institutions, outrage at injustice, empathy for people who are suffering, passion for culture, religious conviction, gratitude and a desire to give back, or countless other reasons. Giving can be a spontaneous reaction to misfortune like a natural disaster, or it can be very strategically done over a long period of time. Strategic donors give with intention: they set objectives based on their interests; do their homework to identify the most effective organizations addressing a problem in a geographic location; and consider such variables as giving models and legal considerations. Smart tech is helping donors be more strategic in their giving choices.
In this chapter, we will explore the ways smart tech is being used to create customized experiences for donors at every level. We will also outline ways major donors should be investing in the ethical and responsible use of smart tech. Finally, we will discuss the need for large-scale investments in program evaluation to create great outcomes data to be used to feed smart tech systems.
