The first edition The Social Life of Information appeared in March 2000. For a book setting out to question extravagant claims for information, the timing seemed lamentable. Propelled by the dot-com boom, the U.S. economy was continuing a record-setting expansion that made extravagance itself seem understated.1 And yet, the book’s reception far surpassed our expectations. More people than we could have imagined “joined the conversation,” eagerly discussing and contesting in person, on our Web site, in e-mail discussions, and in reviews, many issues that we had raised.2 To all, we would like to express deeply felt thanks.
