Google owns 67.5 percent of the U.S. search market, and 87.1 percent of the U.S. mobile search market (Smith 2014). That’s more 3.5 billion searches per day, or broken down, more than 40,000 search queries every second (Internet Live Stats 2014). According to a CNN article, “boasting more than 500 million users, Google’s mail service [Gmail] is much more than a service to many, it’s damn near a religion” (Covert 2014). It is no surprise, then, that Google would grow its influence even farther through social media.
