Pun is a subtype of irony, one of the four master tropes. A pun playfully exploits homophones, words pronounced the same but differing in meaning from one another—whether spelled the same way or not. Puns, though frequently funny, are often used for serious effect. A pun's irony resides in the incongruity inherent in one sound resounding with multiple meanings; for example stare/stair, Rome/roam.
Many homophones are homonyms—words spelled alike though different in meaning as in the multiple definitions of train: 1) To teach; 2) A vehicle that runs on a track; 3) A succession of connected ideas; 4) The trailing part of a skirt, etc.
