Respect for the Creative Process

MAKING PHOTOGRAPHS IS AN ACT OF CREATIVITY. I groan every time I hear a photographer (or anyone, for that matter) tell me they “aren’t very creative,” as if it’s the fault of their genes that they aren’t creating the things they wish they could. As far as I can tell, creativity is about two things: the way we think, and the way we turn those thoughts into reality.

Creativity is a knowable process, and there are things we can do to become “more creative.” The first thing we can do is wrap our brains around the idea that creativity is not so much a linear process as it is a spiraling one.
