7. The Progress Report

The manager looked around the conference room with pride. Team after team was reporting progress, and each report was greeted with clapping and congratulations. Costs were down significantly, productivity was up without the help of any temps, and overtime and sick time were down. His people were definitely proving they could deliver. The unit had never looked so good.

But a full month had gone by since he’d received the warning memo from headquarters, and there had been no further news. The manager felt a growing anxiety about what the company might be thinking and whether someone in the executive suite would pull the plug ...
