Let’s close with a nearly true story about a manager named Violet. The tale below includes best-case and worst-case experiences I’ve seen managers work through by conducting stay interviews with their teams. By enhancing their skills over time, these managers grew talents in some employees, promoted others, fired a few, developed succession plans for those who merited them, and devised back-up strategies for those who proved undependable. That is, they learned all there was to learn about each employee and acted on that knowledge to build stronger, more productive teams over time, and they distinguished their careers as a result. But some missteps were made along the way.
