Rachel Sumekh was a college sophomore when she saw a friend's Facebook post that raised an intriguing question: Would it be possible to collect the unused meal passes from student meal plans and use them to feed students who faced food insecurity?

Rachel was immediately taken with the idea, even though student hunger had never registered as an issue with her. “I saw a way that I could make a difference, and I felt a passion for it, even though I hadn't been passionate about solving student hunger before then,” Rachel told us. She fired off an email offering to make up flyers for the project, and from there catapulted herself into the movement called Swipe Out Hunger (SOH).
