One of the few similarities between the service business of the recording studio and a retail operation like a department store is that both are subject to what retailers call shrinkage—shoplifting or theft.

There are two ways that equipment and accessories can take an unscheduled trip outside. The first is unintentional: The guitarist gets one of your connecting cords jumbled up in his own tangle, or the cartage guys mistakenly swipe the SMPTE converter box that’s been set up on the synthesist’s rig by a second. The second way out is a result of our less-than-perfect civilization and the relative ease with which an expensive microphone can be packed into an instrument case at 2:00 a.m.
