Sustainable Transport and Logistics:Vision or Reality?

INTRODUCTION: THE TRANSPORT PROBLEM

On 25 November 2002, readers of the Daily Telegraph were provided with clear evidence of the critical state of the UK’s transport system. In a substantial poll of its readers on ‘What's wrong with Britain’, the newspaper reported that of the 1420 on-line respondents:

  • 85 per cent believed that because of congestion and frequent rail delays ‘Britain is grinding to a halt’.
  • 82 per cent were dissatisfied with the state of road traffic; 93 per cent expected the problems to get worse or remain unchanged.
  • 61 per cent were dissatisfied with local transport; 86 per cent expected the quality to get worse or remain unchanged.
