Table 1 lists the various components of a call number in library classification and defines the standard subdivisions as non–subject recurring elements of a publication. This chapter provides a brief history of the standard subdivisions and their varying nomenclature, describes the various categories of standard subdivisions and their features, and enumerates the characteristics of such subdivision.
