Bonds issued by the United States government, particularly those issued by the Treasury Department, are some of the lowest-risk bonds that you can buy. This is because the US government guarantees them. While there is some risk that the government would be unable to repay its obligations, as happened to Argentina in 2001, the risk is on the low end of the spectrum. US Treasury bonds are considered to be unsecured bonds because they are not guaranteed by tangible assets. Instead, they are guaranteed by the taxing authority of the US government.
