Located approximately 70 miles north of Tampa is the small Citrus County town of Hernando (2020 census population of 8253 residents) and the location of Lake Hernando. Every November the Citrus County Education Foundation hosts the Beast of the Southeast (www.citruseducation.org/dragonboat) dragon boat races, one of the largest dragon boat festivals in the Southeast United States. The dragon boat races draw 5000 participants comprising both corporate and community teams from all across the country. Each team that registers will race a minimum of three times on race day.
