PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS DUE TO A GENERAL MEDICAL CONDITION OR SUBSTANCE

 

 

 

These disorders were described in the DSM-III-R as “organic delusional disorder” and “organic hallucinosis.” Diagnosis involves presumption rather than definitive diagnosis. The course and prognosis depend on the underlying etiology. The most common etiology of organic psychotic disorders, particularly among younger persons, is substance abuse. General medical disorders include degenerative and cerebrovascular disorders, epilepsy, brain tumors, endocrinopathies, systemic lupus erythematosus, and a host of other medical conditions.
