SEXUAL DYSFUNCTIONS DUE TO A GENERAL MEDICAL CONDITION OR SUBSTANCE

 

 

 

The comprehensive evaluation of a patient whose sexual dysfunction is thought to be caused by a physical condition or substance includes a complete medical and psychiatric history (with thorough attention to drugs and alcohol), a complete sexual history, physical examination with emphasis on neurological and vascular evaluations, urologic or gynecological consultation, laboratory screening for diabetes and androgen deficiency in men or estrogen deficiency in women, and, for men, polysomnography for nocturnal penile tumescence (Schover, 1990; Schover & Jensen, 1988).
