307.23 TOURETTE'S DISORDER

It is difficult to tell when Tourette's disorder begins. The most frequent initial symptoms are eye tics; head tics are also common. Throat clearing, sniffing, and coughing are much less commonly seen as initial symptoms, and may be misdi-agnosed as upper respiratory tract infections or allergies. Onset is usually between 2 and 15 years of age, with about half of patients presenting their symptoms by the age of seven and 75% by age 11 (Kurlan, 1993).
