The summer solstice marks the date when the earth’s axis is most inclined towards the sun – this results in the longest day of the year (and occurs between 20-22 June in the northern hemisphere). Strictly, this should mark the middle of the summer season in the astronomical calendar. However, due to seasonal lag the warmest days of the year tend to occur after this date, and so in the meteorological calendar summer extends for the whole months of June, July and August.
