When it comes to stock market indices, FTSE isn’t the only player; a big competitor is MSCI, which has been calculating global equity indices since 1969. As with FTSE, the MSCI indices are used as benchmarks for many funds, and as the basis for index funds and ETFs. When companies are added to, or deleted from, their indices this can have a significant impact on the share prices as funds rebalance their portfolios. The MSCI indices are reviewed quarterly, in February, May, August and November (details at: www.msci.com/index-review).
