CHAPTER 7Challenge Your Fears: Three Strategies to “Do It Anyway”

After meeting the goblin, the child realizes he does not need the foreign princess after all. Then an idea pops in the child's head: What if he goes to the edge of the forest? Perhaps the view is clearer from there. Perhaps the path of roses is even visible.

The child walks and walks, until he reaches the edge of the forest, which ends at a cliff. Beyond is a strange land he has not yet visited. A white‐bearded magician stands on the other side. Right behind him, the child sees the beginning of a path framed by magnificent rose bushes.

“Come this way,” says the magician, extending his hand with a smile.

“I'm scared!” says the child.

“What are you afraid of?”

“I've never been so far out! This forest is all I know. What if I get lost? And I don't know how to cross! There is no bridge to the other side.”

“Of course, there is!” says the magician. “You just cannot see it yet. But I will help you.”

The child looks at the cliff again. He can now see a small bridge that connects to the other side.

“Are you ready?” asks the magician.

Before the child can answer, a snake slithers by. The snake's name is Yezbutt.

“What are you doing?” the snake asks.

The child explains that he wants to cross to the other side to find the path of roses.

“Yes, but you don't have the right shoes! You cannot cross until you have the right shoes.”
