CHAPTER 8Let It Go: Three Ways to Make Peace with the Past

Having dealt with Yezbutt the snake, the child is now determined to cross the ravine and join the magician on the other side. He has said out loud that he is ready. He takes a minute to look at the forest behind him to say goodbye. But when he tries to take a step toward the bridge, he struggles to move. Vines have grown around his feet. The harder he tries to lift his feet, the tighter they become.

He looks to the other side for help; he cannot see very clearly into the distance. The path of roses quickly vanishes into the clouds, and there is no telling where it leads. Even the magician appears slightly out of focus. Is he real, or is the child making him up?

“I have vines around my feet, and I cannot see where I'm going,” the child says to the magician. “Are you still there?”

“I am always with you, even when you can't see me,” says the magician. “Because we are one and the same person.”

The child is perplexed. “What do you mean? I've never seen you before!”

“That's because you've never gazed at this side before, but I've been waiting for you. Many years ago, I was you. And I am who you can be in the future, once you have crossed to this side. I have had a long and wonderful life.”

A long and wonderful life? The child feels better, and his feet feel lighter.

“Listen to my voice,” says the magician. “It will guide you.”
