Reference Dictionaries and Stylebooks

All writers and editors should consult our main reference dictionary, The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 4th edition, and our main stylebook, The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition, when querying spelling or usage.

If these do not provide the answers use Webster’s New World Collegiate Dictionary, 10th edition, The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage, The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law as secondary sources.
