You understand your goal and critical performance indicator, and you’re committed to transparent leadership. It’s time to figure out how you’ll all work to meet your organization’s goals.
To do this, you’ll use a purpose map (Figure 2.1). Also called SOAP, for “strategy on a page,” a purpose map helps you figure out where you are, determine where you want to go, dig out the information you need to share, and begin to determine the actions that will get you there (Figure 2.2). You can use a purpose map for an entire organization or for just one aspect of operations: a department, a function, or even a single person’s role in a business.
