Chapter 4

Flushing of Fuel Oil Piping System

Abstract

The fuel oil system covers receipt, storage, treatment, pressurizing, and forwarding of oil to burners/injectors. Reliable operation of thermal power plants depends on the use of a clean fuel oil system free from foreign material. Before putting fuel oil in service, the circulation system must be cleaned mechanically first, then cleaned by steam/air blowing or water washing, followed by oil flushing to get rid of contaminants. During the initial stage of flushing, a coarse screen of 425 μm may be installed and at final stages a fine mesh screen of 111 μm is placed. During flushing, turbulent fuel oil flow is maintained in the system. Clean fuel oil conforms to NAS class 10 (ISO 21/19/16) ...
