12Contact of Nonconforming Smooth Solids

In this chapter, we examine the contact of nonconforming smooth solids and present thermal resistance models for specific forms of mechanical contact, i.e. point contact and line contact. Classic elastic contact theory is used to predict the contact region size and then combined with thermal constriction models to predict the contact resistance. Models for gap resistance are also developed which allows the joint resistance to be calculated.

A comprehensive review of the Hertz elastic contact model applicable for smooth nonconforming surfaces is given. The contacting surfaces are associated with ellipsoids such as nonaligned long circular cylinders, sphere/flat contact, and a cylinder/flat contact. ...
