5.1 Introduction

The first law analysis of closed systems involved energy transfer processes for a fixed mass of a substance. Most engineering applications, however, involve equipment through which a steady stream of a gas or liquid will be flowing. Turbines, compressors, pumps, heat exchangers, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment are examples which fall in this category.
