The first law analysis of closed systems involved energy transfer processes for a fixed mass of a substance. Most engineering applications, however, involve equipment through which a steady stream of a gas or liquid will be flowing. Turbines, compressors, pumps, heat exchangers, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment are examples which fall in this category. In analysing such flow systems the control volume approach is used.
