The next day, Matt only had one meeting. Another senior manager in the Chicago office, Rebecca, asked if he could join in on a pitch presentation, along with some other consultants, for an upcoming merger for Delta Development Group that would have a variety of HR, pricing and enterprise technology implications. Matt had done enough projects for companies undergoing mergers and was known to be a great person to have in the room for meetings such as this one to offer his perspective on different issues that might crop up. Given that the client was in Chicago, Matt thought it could potentially be a good project to join if they won the business if for nothing but to avoid travel for a bit.

He grabbed a coffee to go, kissed Sabina, and left for the meeting. If this goes well, he thought, I might just steal the afternoon back and perhaps go to the climbing gym or hide out at a coffee shop and read technology, entrepreneurship and current events blogs. If he had time, he might also call and check in with other friends whom he knew were starting or thinking about starting their own businesses. Being connected to people starting businesses would give him the energy he found difficult to access otherwise.

The meeting was scheduled for 10:00 a.m., and it was located past O'Hare airport in a corporate office complex. Matt met Rebecca in front of the building under the large Delta Development Group sign, along with a small gaggle of about six consultants ...
