Sometimes you don’t have to travel very far to find a new rule. This time I didn’t have to travel at all.
If you have children, then, at some stage, you will have the pocket money conversation. It may come as a question or, as was the case in our house, it could be a statement. That morning, just after breakfast, Charlotte, my eight-year-old daughter, looked at me, with the kind of serious look you reserve for a Bank Manager ahead of a tough negotiation, and said, ‘Papa. I need pocket money.’
Note the use of the verb to need, rather than the, let’s face it, much more appropriate to want. I guess she chose it to underscore the importance I should attach to ...
