INTEGRATING FAMILY AND WORK
I was wearing a cute pair of heels and my best maternity outfit. Like any good community organizer, I was walking around the packed Oakland Convention Center as the mayor and other officials responded to our vision for the city.
Shortly thereafter, I became the first organizer at Faith in Action (formerly PICO National Network) to give birth, take maternity leave, and then come back to work as an organizer. I was given a generous parental leave of three months twenty-five years ago (which wasn’t enough, but even now, most women still have to fight to get that much leave before going back to work after childbirth).
