The importance of being honest

A key point in my account of failure and specifically the fall into failure is the move from managing performance to managing perception, when delusion or deception set in. Tied up with this, and a key symptom of failure, is that communication itself dries up. That is because what is happening is not acknowledged or is being kept secret, as failure is revealed.

Happily, this analysis also brings with it two positive insights:

  • Full, accurate and truthful communication is crucial in avoiding failure and ensuring good management.
  • Worthwhile communication imparts a story, a narrative – it has something to say.
