Bangkok’s historical and spiritual heart lies in the Old City. When Chao Phraya Chakri, later pronounced Rama I, assumed the throne in 1782, he first had a canal dug across a neck of land on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River to create an island that emulated the former capital at Ayutthaya.
