Practicalities

1. Opening Hours

Most shops are open Mon–Sat 10am–6pm. Banks are usually open Mon–Fri 10am until mid-afternoon and a few hours on Saturday mornings. Many museums and some other tourist sights are closed on Mondays.

2. Public Holidays

There are only four public holidays in the year with fixed dates that are observed all over India: Republic Day (26 Jan), Independence Day (15 Aug), Gandhi’s birthday (2 Oct) and Christmas (25 Dec). Many other festivals, with variable dates, are celebrated.

3. Smoking Regulations

Smoking is prohibiting throughout India in all public buildings, including restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, malls and offices. You are still allowed to smoke in outdoor areas.
