The Central Fells

This is perhaps the most enchanting part of the Lake District, cut through by the magnificent Langdale, where undulating stone walls climb the fells, giving way to steeper, sterner mountains. At the valley bottom is the rushing River Brathay, edged with paths for walkers. The area is blessed with two lovely settlements: Ambleside, with its excellent restaurant scene and cinemas, and Grasmere, forever associated with Wordsworth. A classic time to visit the area is March, to see the daffodils as they come into full bloom – although be aware that snowstorms are still a distinct possibility at this time.
