Comprising the main islands of Égina, Salamína, Póros, Spétses and Ýdra, with the traditionally Ionian Kýthira further south, the Argo-Saronics stretch some 200 km (125 miles) from Piraeus in Athens to the Peloponnese coast. Both Égina and Salamína were famous for their maritime activities, while Póros and Spétses are better known for their bustling modern capitals, ceramics and pine forests. Ýdra is cosmopolitan and remote Kýthira is one of the candidates for the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love.
