1. Origins

Turkish rug-weaving skills are of ancient origin and have been passed down the generations. They were developed by Central Asian nomads, who used thickly woven goats’ hair to make tents, floor coverings and even cradles. This material was portable, warm and virtually waterproof. People soon began to use these weaves as wall decorations.

2. Flat-Weaves

A rug is only considered to be a carpet (hali) if it has a knotted pile. In flat-weave rugs, the vertical (warp) and horizontal (weft) threads are woven flat. Kilims are the most basic form, with the design (weft) threads woven into the warp; in cicims, a third thread is woven in to create the design, which looks as if it is embroidered.
