Moments in Moscow’s History

1. First Recorded Reference

Moscow was first mentioned in the Ipatievskaya Chronicles of 1147 when Kiev was the capital of Russia. Moscow was then a minor outpost, reputedly founded by Prince Yuri Dolguruki.

2. Mongol Invasion

In 1237–8, the fledgling town was burned to the ground and its denizens massacred by Mongol armies under Batu Khan. Under the Mongols, Russian principalities were left to govern themselves and Moscow grew into a powerful city.

3. Reign of Ivan the Great
