1. Currency

Russia’s currency is the rouble (Rub) which is split into 100 kopeks. Though the rouble stabilized following the 1998 financial crisis, it has been severely weakened by the 2008–9 global credit crisis. Russian roubles can be purchased at certain foreign banks, before your visit.

2. Credit Cards

Although credit cards are accepted at most major restaurants, hotels and supermarkets, many smaller establishments are not equipped to deal with them, so always carry cash as a back-up. Keep a photocopy of your cards separately and warn your card providers that you will be travelling abroad to prevent your cards from being automatically blocked for security reasons.
