Things to Avoid

1. Police

There is a heavy police presence in Moscow, but the usual wisdom applies – if you have done nothing wrong, they are unlikely to be a problem. In case you are stopped, it is advisable to carry a photocopy of your passport, visa and registration to show them rather than handing over your original documents.

2. Scams

An enormous variety of scams have been practised at one time or another in Moscow. A recurring favourite is for a passerby to drop a wallet bulging with cash as he passes you; picking it up will lead you into trouble. You should also avoid any foreigners apparently in distress who claim to need your help urgently. In general, exercise extreme caution when approached by strangers.
