TMT Emergent States

The concept of the “emergent state” is relatively new to the TMT literature.35 It describes the underlying “mood” of a TMT. The state in which a TMT is at a certain moment—for example, one of high trust—influences the way in which the TMT members discuss a new strategy. And based on what happens during this discussion, TMT members may adapt their level of trust. Although the concept of the emergent state is new, researchers have already addressed multiple different states, among which are social cohesion and trust.

Social Cohesion

Social cohesion describes the TMT members’ attraction to the team that reflects their shared commitment and team pride.36 Researchers have also called this state “social integration” or simply “cohesion.” ...
