Pareto's ancestors were affluent merchants, noblemen, and political agitators from northern Italy. His father was a political exile in France when Vilfredo Frederico Damaso Pareto was born in 1848, the “Year of Revolution.” Ten years later his family returned to Italy for his schooling and Pareto graduated in engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Turin in 1869. His thesis reported on his discovery of an equilibrium theory for solids. Pareto worked many years as a consulting engineer for the government-run railway company, but became an outspoken critic of the Italian government. After inheriting wealth, Pareto quit his position and widely advocated laissez-faire policies such as free trade and open competition. ...
