Chapter 5

Public Gathering Places

Abstract

This chapter deals with a number of places where people gather, such as casinos, convention centers, trade shows, festivals, and events. At first glance, these different forms of public gatherings seem to have very little in common, but in reality, they actually have a great deal in common. Each one contains elements of risk and they all need a special security force that collaborates with local law enforcement. In addition, each public gathering has cash-on-hand issues, which requires some form of background check. Finally, they all have crowd-control issues, making them vulnerable to acts of crime, especially crimes of opportunity, along with potential terrorist attacks.
