Chapter 1 What is a toxic culture?
Introduction
One day I went with someone to his bank in Sydney. He told his business to the receptionist and was asked to wait. After 15 minutes, he enquired when he might be seen, as nothing was happening and the staff were gossiping. After a few more minutes, a staff member put down their coffee and sauntered over to him and rather coldly dealt with his query, which required him to fill in a form and then go to the back of the queue. Eventually, he met the staff member again and, without any comment, she ticked it and slung it into an out-tray. ‘OK’ was all she said and signalled for him to leave. We left with a feeling of irritation.
