The Organization of African Unity (OAU) Model Law was developed as a direct response to the decision taken and the directive given by the OAU Council of Ministers in 1988. As its title suggests, it is an effort to create a sui generis system of protection of the rights of local communities, farmers and breeders and for the regulation of access to biological resources.
